2015 Zipp 88 Hub Recall

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, SRAM has voluntarily issued a safety recall on its Zipp 88 aluminum front hubs.

The recall issue
These hubs have been recalled because the hub flange ring can fail. If this happens, it poses a crash and injury hazard to riders. The recalled hubs were sold at specialty bicycle dealers nationwide between October 2008 and December 2010. The front hub sold for about $215. As a pre-built wheel, it sold for about $920. If bought as part of a front and rear wheelset, it sold for about $2,300. Bicycles with the wheelset containing the recalled hub sold for about $5,000 to $12,000.

There have been 2 reported incidents of collapsed front wheels. Both resulted in stitches, bruises, lacerations, plus a concussion in one case.

How to identify if you have the recalled hub
This recall involves roughly 12,000 hubs. The aluminum hub shell is silver. The outside flange ring is gray aluminum in the standard option and Blue, Gold, Gray, Pink or Red in the ZedTech options. The diameter of the two clinch nuts is approximately 1 inch. The first version of the 88 hub is the only one affected by the recall. The first version has the Z logo on the flange ring. The other versions – not affected by this recall – do not have the Z logo on the flange ring. The hubs were sold in five bike brands (below) and sold separately.
